Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 35th European Cystic Fibrosis Conference, which will take place at the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD), Ireland's new world class purpose-built international conference and event venue. The CCD is located in the heart of the city of Dublin with all facilities for networking and tourist attractions nearby.
The objective of this conference is to provide a forum for the discussion of the best basic and applied science, and facilitate translation of the latest knowledge into daily clinical practice. The programme will reflect these priorities and bring together scientific and clinical teams. You can expect a high quality programme of plenary sessions, symposia and workshops, with international experts in cystic fibrosis invited to present lectures. We will also provide a social platform and a great opportunity for making or renewing contacts with colleagues in the field.
Dublin is one of Europe’s most popular destinations.  It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, steeped in history and tradition, with plenty to see and do. In the recent past, many historical areas have been rejuvenated and restored, with new shopping centres, restaurants, clubs and bars.  This combined with the world famous Irish charm and friendly hospitality makes Dublin an enjoyable and exciting city to visit.

We extend a very warm welcome to the 35th European Cystic Fibrosis Conference!

The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI)

Welcome to Dublin,

The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI) is honoured to be involved in hosting the 2012 ECFS Conference in Dublin, Ireland. The venue, the Convention Centre in Dublin, is widely recognised as the best large conference facility in Ireland. It is perfectly situated on the north quays of the river Liffey, near the historic and cultural centre of Dublin.

The conference takes place at an exciting time. In recent years there have been significant strides to improve CF services in Ireland. This has come about as a result of parents, people with CF and clinicians coming together to highlight issues and working with the government to improve services.

An important indicator of this progress has been the development of specialised CF centres around major population centres in Ireland and concomitant investment in the multidisciplinary teams vital for CF care. The introduction of new born screening for CF in 2011 is also an example of this progress.

A further exciting development is the increasing participation of clinicians in Ireland in clinical research on CF, in particular through international collaboration. The Medical and Scientific Council of the CFAI which includes leading CF clinicians, plays a crucial role in advising our Association on these and related developments.

The ECFS has played an invaluable role in guiding progress in CF services in Ireland in recent years, particularly through its annual conferences, its publications and guidance on service standards through its consensus reports. Such support is of particular importance given the very high incidence of CF in Ireland.

Ireland has the highest incidence of CF in the world, with around three times the incidence of the United States or the rest of Europe. There are 1200 people with CF in Ireland with a population of just under 4.7m people and 1 in 19 carry the modified CF gene. In short, medical and scientific developments are particularly important for Ireland.

The 2012 ECFS conference coincides with the 50th anniversary of the CFAI and the 20th anniversary of the last time the conference was held in Dublin. We very much look forward to greeting you in Dublin in June 2012 and providing a traditional Irish welcome.
