The 2nd largest city in Brittany is one of the oldest ports in France.  Its history has always been influenced by its geographical situation because the city occupies a strategic site at the back of a bay whose only entrace is a narrow channel.  The city itself was almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War and is now characterised by the geometrical layout of its main streets, but some old and significant buildings still testify to its glorious past.

Brest and its Maritime History

You will discover the city centre, the pont de Recouvrance (largest vertical lift bridge in Europe), the Tour Tanguy and the castle, from the Roman castellum to Vauban's citadel of the 17th Century.  The tour continues with a visit to the Musée de la Marine.  Housed in the exceptional frame of the Brest castle, the museum displays a very beautiful collection of ship models, paintings and sculptures related to the naval tradition of the city.
